A quiet storm unfolded in Karen last week when former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua hosted a dinner aimed at building political bridges ahead of the 2027 elections. Among the expected guests was former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i, whose presence would have signaled a major shift in Kenya’s political realignments. But he didn’t show up.

According to sources close to both camps, Matiang’i’s absence wasn’t accidental. The invitation was received and acknowledged, but never accepted in full spirit. Insiders suggest that former President Uhuru Kenyatta advised Matiang’i against attending, wary of the political implications such a meeting would carry.

For Gachagua, the dinner was more than just a meeting, it was a chance to rebrand, rebuild alliances, and possibly form a coalition powerful enough to challenge the current power structure. The guest list included loyal allies and a few fence-sitters, all looking to see how the evening would unfold.

When Matiang’i failed to appear, the message was clear: he isn’t ready to align with Gachagua, at least not yet. The absence highlighted the lingering mistrust and unresolved tensions among former power players, many of whom are still navigating their political futures in a rapidly shifting landscape.

The dinner ended without the breakthrough Gachagua had hoped for. Food was served, discussions were had, but the political pact that could have redefined 2027 never materialized. For now, the silence from Matiang’i speaks louder than any statement.
