Police in Nairobi have launched an investigation into a tragic shooting incident involving a police officer attached to State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohammed. The officer allegedly shot and killed a 35-year-old man, Amos Lagat, at a nightclub in Kawangware.

Eyewitnesses claim the incident was sparked by a dispute over a bet at a local pub in the Amboseli area. According to reports, Lagat had won the bet, which angered the officer who had lost. The argument escalated, and the officer allegedly fired multiple shots at Lagat, hitting him in the stomach and chest at close range.

Lagat was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries upon arrival.

The accused officer later reported a different version of events to the police. He claimed he was attacked by three men while walking home around 8:00 PM on Sunday. According to his statement, he fired shots in the air in self-defense after one of the men allegedly tried to snatch his Ceska pistol.

The officer also claimed he sustained an arm injury during the struggle.

Following the incident, the officer was disarmed and taken to the hospital for treatment. His firearm was confiscated as part of the investigation. Police at Muthangari Police Station have taken over the case, with plans to revisit the scene, interview witnesses, and review any available CCTV footage.

The incident adds to growing concerns about police conduct, coming just weeks after a General Service Unit (GSU) officer shot a colleague on February 26.

Authorities have assured the public of a thorough investigation to uncover the truth behind Lagat’s fatal shooting.
