At the height of his political career, during the final years of former President Daniel Arap Moi’s rule, Julius Ole Sunkuli was one of the most influential figures in government.

Serving as the Minister of Internal Security, he was a key figure in Moi’s administration, effectively steering the government’s operations.

However, his political fortunes took a drastic turn in 2002 when the National Rainbow Coalition (NARC) ended KANU’s 40-year reign. Sunkuli, like many other KANU stalwarts, lost his parliamentary seat in Kilgoris, marking a significant setback in his career.

For two decades, Sunkuli remained in the political wilderness. But in 2022, when many thought his career had ended, he staged an unexpected comeback. Running on a KANU ticket, he defied the odds to reclaim the Kilgoris MP seat, making him one of the few elected legislators from the once-dominant party.

A seasoned politician with close to 30 years of experience, Sunkuli is a University of Nairobi-trained lawyer.

His extensive knowledge of governance and legislation makes him one of the most experienced lawmakers in the National Assembly today.

As a rare survivor from the Moi era, he is now seen as the “grandfather” of the House, symbolizing resilience and political endurance.
