Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya formally welcomed President William Ruto and National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula to Saboti for the funeral service of former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairman Wafula Chebukati.

The high-profile event, attended by national and regional leaders, was a moment of unity as leaders set aside political differences to honor Chebukati’s legacy.

Speaking at the event, Natembeya acknowledged Chebukati’s contribution to Kenya’s electoral system, describing him as a man of integrity who served the country with diligence. He urged leaders to emulate the late chairman’s commitment to democracy and fairness.

President Ruto, in his tribute, lauded Chebukati for his courage during his tenure, particularly in overseeing the country’s highly contested elections.

The Head of State emphasized the need for independent institutions to uphold democracy without undue influence.

Speaker Wetang’ula, on his part, reminisced about his personal and professional relationship with Chebukati, highlighting his calm and principled nature even in difficult moments.

The funeral service drew mourners from across the country, including prominent politicians, family members, and ordinary Kenyans who came to pay their last respects.

Despite recent political tensions, the event served as a rare moment of unity, with leaders from different factions coming together in honor of Chebukati’s service to the nation.

As Saboti bid farewell to one of its most distinguished sons, the calls for upholding democracy and integrity in public service echoed throughout the ceremony.
