On March 4, 2025, during the funeral of the late Malulu Injendi, Member of Parliament for Malava Constituency, a notable incident occurred involving Kakamega County Woman Representative, Elsie Muhanda.
As she ascended the dais to deliver her tribute, Muhanda stumbled and fell, drawing immediate attention from attendees.
Eyewitnesses reported that the fall happened swiftly, causing a brief moment of concern among the mourners. One attendee remarked, “It was sudden; we were all worried for her safety.”
Despite the mishap, Muhanda quickly regained her composure and proceeded with her speech, eulogizing the late MP for his dedication to the community.
She highlighted Injendi’s commitment to supporting widows in the constituency, stating, “Widows in Malava felt his warmth. His death has left them more vulnerable.”
The incident sparked various reactions from those present. A mourner commented, “Such accidents can happen to anyone. It’s commendable how she continued with her address.”
Another attendee added, “The platform seemed unstable. Perhaps better arrangements should have been made.”
Her prior appeal for orderliness made the incident more poignant for some attendees. A local resident noted, “It’s ironic that after asking us to be orderly, she faced this unfortunate event. But accidents are unpredictable.”
The funeral, held in Lukusi Village, Kakamega County, was attended by numerous dignitaries, including National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi.
They joined family, friends, and constituents in mourning the loss of Injendi, who passed away on February 17, 2025, at the age of 58.
The ceremony proceeded with tributes highlighting Injendi’s contributions to the sugar sector and his efforts in championing reforms beneficial to cane farmers.
Bungoma Senator Wafula Wakoli stated, “The Sugar Bill, which Hon. Injendi contributed significantly to, will revolutionize the sugar industry for the benefit of farmers.”
Despite the brief disruption caused by Muhanda’s fall, the funeral continued smoothly, with leaders and residents paying their respects to a man many described as a dedicated public servant.
The incident served as a reminder of the unpredictability of events and the resilience of individuals in the face of unforeseen challenges.
