A secondary school student from Msikiti Nuru village in Diani, Kwale County was lynched by a mob in a tragic case of mistaken identity.
What started as an evening journey back home from a local market ended in tragedy after the Form Four student was killed by a mob that accused him of being a thief.
In a report by Inooro TV, on his way home, some locals spotted him, triggering suspicion which attracted an irate mob that beat him severely.
Unfortunately, the boy sustained serious injuries that led to his death on the spot.
The incident prompted a standoff between police and some locals who opposed the picking up of the body of the student to the mortuary.
Area police boss said mob lynching is criminal and warned those caught over the same will face serious charges. The police officer said there is an alarming trend of lynching suspects in the area, which he termed criminal.
Family and neighbours said the boy was not criminal and demanded the police expedite investigations into his murder and bring the perpetrators to book.
Innocent people have been framed and killed or injured out of such incidents. It is criminal to participate in mob lynching.
Various leaders are urged to conduct civic education on the public in the issue, which he argued is threatening and worrying.
