A Kenyan officer deployed in Haiti as part of the Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission tragically lost his life after sustaining critical injuries during an operation in Ségur-Savien, Artibonite department.
MSS Force Commander Godfrey Otunge confirmed the incident, stating that the officer was immediately airlifted to Aspen Level 2 Hospital but, unfortunately, succumbed to the injuries.
The operation was initiated in response to urgent pleas from residents of Pont-Sonde, who have been enduring escalating violence from local gangs.
The Kenyan contingent, collaborating with Haitian National Police and other multinational forces, has been actively engaged in efforts to neutralize these gangs and restore peace in the region.
This tragic event marks a significant moment in the ongoing international mission aimed at stabilizing Haiti, a nation that has been grappling with intensified gang-related violence since the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021.
Kenya has been a pivotal contributor to this mission, deploying over 600 officers to support Haiti’s law enforcement agencies. In February 2025, an additional 200 Kenyan officers joined the mission, underscoring Kenya’s commitment to global peacekeeping efforts.
The loss of the Kenyan officer has been deeply felt among the multinational forces.
Mission official Jack Ombaka expressed profound sorrow, stating, “This is the price our courageous officer paid, he was killed while fighting for the people of Haiti. We salute our fallen hero.”
As investigations into the incident continue, the MSS mission remains resolute in its objective to combat gang violence and restore stability in Haiti.
