Jubilee Party Secretary-General Jeremiah Kioni has raised concerns over growing divisions within the opposition, warning that failure to address internal conflicts could guarantee President William Ruto a second term in office.
Speaking during a political gathering, Kioni criticized the ongoing wrangles among opposition leaders, arguing that the lack of unity is weakening efforts to challenge the Kenya Kwanza administration. He noted that unless a structured plan is put in place, the opposition risks losing ground ahead of the 2027 general election.
āThe confusion within the opposition is playing right into Rutoās hands. If we do not resolve these issues and forge a united front, we will hand him an easy victory,ā Kioni stated.
His remarks come amid reports of internal disagreements within the Azimio la Umoja coalition, with leaders engaging in public spats over political strategy and leadership. Kioni pointed out that these divisions are eroding public confidence and distracting from the oppositionās primary goalāholding the government accountable.
He further stressed the importance of reorganizing the opposition to present a formidable challenge. According to Kioni, the coalition needs to adopt a structured approach, where leaders set aside personal ambitions and focus on collective objectives.
āWe cannot afford to be scattered. The public is watching, and they need to see a strong, focused opposition that can offer a real alternative,ā he added.
Kioni also warned that disunity could discourage voter turnout among opposition supporters, giving Ruto an advantage. He urged opposition figures to resolve their disputes internally rather than airing grievances in public, as this only fuels perceptions of weakness.
With the 2027 election campaigns already taking shape, Kioniās call for unity underscores the urgency for opposition leaders to consolidate their efforts. Whether they heed his warning remains to be seen, but one thing is clearāwithout a strong, united front, Rutoās path to reelection may become much smoother.
