Uasin Gishu Senator Jackson Mandago has defended the new Social Health Authority (SHA) system, dismissing claims that the previous National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) was better.

Speaking on February 21, 2025, Mandago reassured Kenyans that SHA would cover entire families, making healthcare more accessible and affordable.

Mandago emphasized that for universal healthcare to be realized in Kenya, citizens must embrace the new SHA system.

He argued that SHA is designed to reduce the cost of medical treatment, benefiting all Kenyans, especially those who previously struggled with medical expenses under NHIF.

His statement comes amid public debate on whether SHA is an improvement or a downgrade from NHIF.

Some critics believe NHIF was more efficient, while others welcome SHA as a step towards affordable healthcare for all.

As the government rolls out SHA, Mandago’s remarks highlight the need for public awareness and confidence in the new system.

The success of SHA will depend on how effectively it is implemented and whether it meets the needs of Kenyans better than its predecessor.
