Kenya is mourning the loss of former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson Wafula Chebukati, who passed away while receiving treatment at a Nairobi hospital.
His death comes just days after being admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), following several days of treatment at home.
Confirming the news on Friday morning, a family member revealed that Chebukati had been battling an undisclosed illness.
President William Ruto has led the nation in mourning, paying tribute to Chebukati’s legacy and service. In an official statement, President Ruto expressed his deep sorrow:
“I have received the news of the passing of former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Chairperson Wafula Chebukati with profound sorrow. Chebukati was a principled and diligent leader who served the nation with integrity. His death is a great loss to our country. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time. Rest in peace.”
Chebukati served as IEBC chairperson for six years until his retirement in 2023, overseeing the 2017 and 2022 general elections. His leadership during this period was marked by both significant challenges and milestones in Kenya’s democratic journey.
Born on December 22, 1961, Chebukati attended Lenana High School before pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Law at the University of Nairobi.
He later earned a Master’s degree in Business Administration from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).
In addition to his legal career, Chebukati ventured into politics, contesting for the Saboti parliamentary seat in 2007 on an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ticket, though he lost to Eugene Wamalwa of the Party of National Unity (PNU).
Following his political setback, he distanced himself from active politics and was later nominated as IEBC chair by former President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Beyond his public service, Chebukati was a family man, married to Mary Chebukati since 1990. Together, they had three children: Jonathan, Emmanuel, and Rachael.
