Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has called upon Azimio leader Raila Odinga to support President William Ruto in the upcoming 2027 elections.
Through a cryptic message on X, Cherargei suggested that this would reciprocate Ruto’s backing of Odinga in the 2007 presidential race.
In what was seen as a direct warning and caution to Raila, Cherargei said Ruto has stood with Raila from 2007 and now in 2025, hence the need for Raila to also stand with Ruto in 2027.
“In 2007 H.E Ruto during presidential elections he campaigned hard and voted for Baba Raila & in 2025 he is campaigning hard & shall vote for Raila in the African union chairmanship today which Raila has never done to HE Ruto. I hope in the near future Baba Raila atarudisha mkono because he shall win today AUC chairmanship.Baba podpek” read his post
Cherargei pointed out Ruto’s consistent support for Odinga, both in the 2007 elections and currently in his bid for the AU leadership. He expressed hope that Odinga would, in turn, support Ruto in future political endeavors.
This appeal comes as African heads of state convene today to elect the new African Union (AU) Commission Chairperson, with Odinga among the leading candidates.
The AU Commission Chairperson election, taking place during the 38th AU Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, has attracted significant attention.
Odinga faces competition from Djibouti’s Mahmoud Ali Youssouf and Madagascar’s Richard Randriamandrato. The election process requires a candidate to secure a two-thirds majority from the participating member states to be declared the winner.
The outcome of this election holds substantial implications for the continent’s future, as the AU Commission Chairperson plays a pivotal role in steering the union’s policies and initiatives.
