As the Bible says, plans are for man but God fulfils them. Wilfred Mwakavi shares how she ended up in prison.

Wilfred is a mother of 2, nine and 4-year-old. Before being imprisoned, she was a single mom and was planning to go to Saudi Arabia in search of greener pastures. A day after completing her training, she went home to bid her family goodbye as her passport and visa were ready. It was on a Friday and her flight was supposed to take off on Monday.

While at home, an uncle of hers aged 64, came and started insulting Wilfred and her sister. However, he was used to such behaviour so they gave him a deaf ear. Mwakavi packed lunch and headed for the market where her mom worked. Unfortunately, the uncle blocked her way questioning her why she was refusing to sleep with her. He went further to beat her up and she began fighting back.

Kids were all over, laughing at the scene. At long last, Wilfred left after he apologised but the fight wasn’t that serious as no visible damage was done. After leaving the market, Wilfred went to her boyfriend’s place where she spent the night. The next morning the 2 headed for Mwakavis home but from afar they saw a crowd surrounding the compound inclusive of the police.

She wondered what was happening and as she neared, 2 people stopped her stating that the uncle she had fought with had died that same morning. Fear gripped her and she went hiding for a month. After processing everything, she took herself to the police. In Court, she pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 5 years imprisonment for man slaughter.

Currently, she is serving her sentence in Langata Women Prison, awaiting her release in 2027. She advises people to avoid physical assault at any cost in order to stay safe.
