Edith Wanjiru Gitau was the wife of the late Kenyan politician Kenneth Matiba. During her time at Makerere University in the 1950s, she was regarded as a top student and a woman many admired.
She was known for being beautiful, intelligent, and coming from a respected family. Edith and Matiba met when they were children, and Matiba had already decided that she would be his future wife.
Edith’s father, Reverend Musa Gitau, was a well-known clergyman who helped establish important institutions, such as Alliance Boys and Girls High Schools.
Edith attended Alliance Girls High School before pursuing higher education. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Education from the University of London and later obtained a Master of Arts from Columbia University in the U.S.
Edith had a successful career, starting as a community development officer. She was also the first headteacher at Moi Girls High School in Nairobi and later lectured at the University of Nairobi. Despite her career, her role as a devoted wife and mother stood out.
Matiba and Edith married on April 8, 1961, after their university years.
Together, they had five children. Matiba often spoke about how Edith was the pillar of their family, supporting him during his political career and while he was detained. She ensured the family stayed strong during tough times.
Edith was initially opposed to Matiba’s decision to enter politics, fearing the challenges it would bring. She even felt relieved when he resigned from his ministerial post in 1988.
However, when Matiba returned to politics later, Edith remained concerned about the difficult political environment.
Throughout their life, Edith remained a supportive and strong figure in Matiba’s personal and political journey, making her a key part of his success and legacy.
