Nairobi businessman Khalif Kairo, owner of Kai and Karo, recently pleaded with Kenyans for financial help, citing severe business and legal troubles. He shared a Paybill number, asking supporters to donate funds to assist with his mounting legal fees and to keep his business afloat.
shortly after his emotional appeal, a video surfaced showing Kairo enjoying a jet ski ride in Dubai, smiling broadly. This display of apparent luxury has led to widespread outrage among Kenyans, especially those who had contributed to his cause. Many feel betrayed, believing that their hard-earned money was misused to fund his lavish lifestyle.
Kairo defended his trip, stating that a close friend who owns a tour company sponsored his Dubai getaway. However, this explanation has done little to quell the anger. Critics have also resurfaced past social media posts where Kairo flaunted his wealth and belittled others, further fueling the backlash.
Befoe this controversy, Kairo had faced multiple legal challenges. He was accused of receiving payments from clients without delivering the promised vehicles, leading to several court cases and arrests. In response to these challenges, he initiated a crowdfunding campaign on WeFunder, which reportedly raised over Ksh12.9 million (approximately $100,000) within 24 hours. However, the account was subsequently shut down due to ongoing legal issues.
Following the closure of his WeFunder account, Kairo directly appealed to the public for donations via a Paybill number. He assured contributors that the funds would be used to resolve pending vehicle deliveries and legal matters. He also promised to provide an audit trail detailing how the donations would be utilized once the situation stabilized
