Parliament descended into chaos today as National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula struggled to maintain order after a court ruling stripped Kenya Kwanza of its majority status, handing control to the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition.
As the session resumed, Azimio MPs confidently occupied the majority benches, triggering heated protests from Kenya Kwanza lawmakers. The shift in numbers, following the court’s determination that Azimio rightfully held the majority, created an intense standoff that quickly escalated.
Speaker Wetang’ula, visibly frustrated, repeatedly called for order as members from both sides shouted over each other. Attempts to restore calm were met with resistance, especially from Kenya Kwanza legislators who accused the Speaker of failing to defend their position. In a dramatic moment, Wetang’ula stood, slammed his gavel, and ordered unruly MPs to either sit down or leave the chamber.
Despite his efforts, the session remained chaotic, with Azimio leaders asserting their newfound authority by demanding changes in parliamentary committees and leadership positions. Their representatives argued that the court’s ruling must be implemented immediately, signaling a major shake-up in how parliamentary business will be conducted moving forward.
Kenya Kwanza MPs, on the other hand, decried what they termed as a political coup, with some demanding an appeal against the court’s decision. However, with the legal ruling now in effect, Azimio’s dominance in the House is set to reshape legislative priorities and potentially challenge government-backed bills.
