The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a warning for heavy rainfall across several parts of the country, lasting from January 29 to February 2, 2025. The downpours will affect regions including Nairobi, Kisumu, and other counties, with significant weather disruptions expected.
Kenya Met Director General David Gikungu shared that the rainfall will primarily impact the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the South-eastern lowlands. These areas should brace for moderate to heavy rains, especially during the afternoon hours. Counties such as Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kakamega, and others in the Rift Valley will experience intense downpours, while lighter rains will be seen in the mornings and evenings.
In addition, Nairobi, along with counties like Nyandarua, Laikipia, and Meru, will see heavy rains during the first two days of the forecast period. However, these rains are expected to ease by the weekend, giving way to sunnier weather on February 1 and 2.
The southeastern counties of Kitui, Makueni, and Machakos will experience moderate rainfall, while the Coast, North-eastern, and North-western regions will remain mostly dry, with only occasional showers early in the forecast period.
Residents are also being warned of significantly cold night temperatures, especially in the Highlands East areas, where temperatures could dip as low as 7°C. Conversely, the Rift Valley and certain western counties are expected to experience higher daytime temperatures, reaching up to 31°C.
As Kenyans prepare for these weather conditions, authorities urge residents to stay alert, ensure proper drainage systems are in place, and take necessary precautions to avoid flooding and other weather-related hazards.
