Renowned lawyer and politician Nelson Havi has stirred debate with his remarks about former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, praising his ability to attract massive crowds while questioning his political judgement. Speaking during an interview, Havi described Gachagua as a “distinguished crowd mobiliser,” acknowledging his talent for captivating audiences despite his perceived shortcomings in decision-making.

“Former DP Gachagua is a distinguished crowd mobiliser. He may be poor in his judgement, but he pulls crowds,” Havi stated.

The former Law Society of Kenya (LSK) president further noted that Gachagua’s success in connecting with ordinary Kenyans stems from his natural charisma and knack for entertainment. Havi pointed out that many Kenyans tend to gravitate toward leaders who entertain and engage them, a skill Gachagua has mastered.

“The unfortunate thing about some Kenyans is that they listen to whoever entertains them the most, and Rigathi has that gift,” Havi added.

Gachagua, who has recently faced political criticism and challenges following his exit as Deputy President, remains a polarizing figure in Kenya’s political scene. Despite this, his ability to attract large crowds during rallies and events has kept him in the spotlight, making him a force to reckon with in grassroots mobilization.

Havi’s comments have sparked mixed reactions online, with some agreeing that Gachagua’s appeal lies in his relatability and humor, while others argue that leadership requires more than entertainment value.

The lawyer’s remarks also highlight a broader discussion about the qualities Kenyans prioritize in their leaders. While some citizens seek competence and strong decision-making, others are drawn to personalities who can connect with them emotionally and provide a sense of belonging.

As Rigathi Gachagua continues to navigate the complex political landscape, his ability to mobilize and entertain may keep him relevant in Kenya’s ever-dynamic political arena, even as questions about his judgement linger.
