Nelson Havi, former President of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), has stated his intention to run as former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i’s deputy in the 2027 general election. Havi made the announcement on his X (previously Twitter) account, declaring his willingness to collaborate with Matiang’i to oust President William Ruto.
Havi’s remarks were sparked by what he called former Chief Justice David Maraga’s refusal to respond to public clamor to run for president. Havi sarcastically criticized Maraga’s inaction, claiming that at the end of President Ruto’s term, Kenya’s condition could worsen even further, making it more difficult for future leaders to effect major change.
“Kenyans, if we do not exercise caution, Dr. Fred Matiang’i may be the only alternative to Dr. William Ruto in 2027, and he may become President. We would have gone from bad to worse. If C.J. David Maraga denies our honest plea to run, I will offer my name,” Havi said.
The announcement aroused debate, with many people guessing on the political implications of a Havi-Matiang’i ticket. Both leaders have yet to share additional information on their initiatives.
