Raila Odinga issued a statement after accompanying President Ruto to Tanzania for an AU leaders meeting. According to him, he has a passionate call for change in his vision for Africa’s energy future.
Raila stated that the sun that rises over our vast lands, the winds that sweep across our plains, and the rivers that flow through our valleys are more than just natural wonders; they are the keys to our liberation from energy poverty. He envisions an Africa in which every home, school, and hospital is powered by the clean, renewable energy that our continent so abundantly possesses. Raila, as Chairperson of the AUC, has stated that he will put his heart and soul into making this dream a reality, investing in the infrastructure that will illuminate our future.
Raila also stated that he has walked through villages where darkness falls with the sun and children study by the flickering light of kerosene lamps, noting that this is not the Africa he envisions. He also stated that he will fight with all of his might to bring dependable electricity to every corner of our continent, particularly to those who have been left behind. Off-grid solutions, mini-grids powered by the sun and wind, are more than just technologies; they are lifelines that he will fight for with all of his strength.
Raila also stated that the threat of climate change looms large, but he will not allow it to define our future, claiming that Africa will not be a victim, but rather a leader in the global fight against this existential challenge. He also stated that he will stand tall on the global stage, advocating for our continent’s right to a sustainable future, and that he will demand the resources and support that Afrika requires to transition to a low-carbon economy, not just for the sake of the planet, but also for our children and their children.
However, Raila stated that he cannot do this alone, and that African leaders must embark on this journey together. Raila went on to say that he plans to form cross-border partnerships that will bring African nations, the private sector, and international allies together for a common cause. Raila stated that we will work together to create an energy future that is resilient, inclusive, and prosperous for all Africans, in addition to being sustainable.
Raila expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the esteemed Heads of State and Government who have gathered in Tanzania today for the Africa Energy Summit.
