KOT reacts to Mutahi Ngunyi dumping Uhuru for Ruto’s government | Nairobi NewsMutahi Ngunyi, a Kenyan political expert, has sparked a new controversy regarding the 2027 General Election by boldly asserting that the Somali and Mulembe populations will play a significant role in determining the next president.
In a statement made on X, Ngunyi stated that the Somali and Mulembe NATIONS will determine the 2027 election. I have nothing against Kikuyu PRIVILEGE, but the party has ended! Sorry.” Given the Kikuyu and Luo communities’ historical dominance in Kenyan politics, this assertion has caused major discussion. Ngunyi’s remark implies a shift in political power, with smaller groups positioned to control the future.
The political analyst’s comments come as President William Ruto and his allies ramp up campaigning in Western Kenya, the heart of the Mulembe population. Ruto has spent the previous week visiting with local leaders and announcing economic initiatives in the region, signalling his desire to consolidate support.
Meanwhile, the Somali community’s growing economic and political prominence may make it a key player in the upcoming elections. Meanwhile, Mt. Kenya officials, like former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, have worked to keep the Kikuyu people united. Gachagua has hinted at launching a new political organisation to protect the region’s interests despite shifting alliances.
However, Ngunyi’s remarks suggest that this traditional power base may no longer be sufficient to hold the country’s highest office. Mutahi Ngunyi defected to Kenya Kwanza. The views are consistent with recent political manoeuvres by opposition leaders. Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has already stated his preparedness to launch campaigning, asking young people to obtain identification cards and register to vote.
He criticised President Ruto for allegedly intimidating independent institutions and accusing his administration of marginalising smaller areas. Meanwhile, the Jubilee Party has selected former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i as its presidential candidate in 2027. Matiang’i, a Kisii of the Gusii community, has garnered support from his region’s authorities, who believe it is time for a minority to rise into power.
