Popular comedian Eric Omondi has made an urgent appeal to Kenyans during his recent interview with Wasafi Media in Tanzania, demanding immediate support for local musicians.

“Tanzanian music is miles ahead of us right now. Our music industry needs emergency rescue because our artists are struggling to survive,” Omondi said during the candid interview.

The outspoken entertainer pointed out how Kenyan music has lost its former glory since the early 2000s while Tanzania’s Bongo flavor continues to dominate African airwaves.

Speaking in Tanzania, Omondi pushed for a mandatory 75% local content quota on Kenyan media platforms. He argued this move would help local artists earn better income and compete with regional powerhouses like Diamond Platnumz.

“Look at Diamond Platnumz earning millions while our talents struggle. We must ask ourselves what Kenyan artists need to reach such levels,” he stated.

The comedian highlighted the stark contrast between the two East African music industries. He reminded listeners that Kenyan music once ruled the region in the late 1990s and early 2000s but has since lost its competitive edge.

During the interview, Omondi praised Tanzania’s music industry for maintaining high standards and achieving continental recognition alongside Nigerian Afrobeats.

His remarks sparked immediate reactions from Kenyan music industry stakeholders. Local radio presenter Dj Ally commented, “Kenyan musicians need to step up their game and create quality content that can compete internationally.”

The discussion has reignited debate about the state of Kenya’s music industry. Several artists have supported Omondi’s call for increased airplay of local content.

Music producer Magix Enga added weight to the conversation, stating, “Our artists have talent, but without proper support systems and media backing, we cannot match Tanzania’s success.”

Omondi’s interview comes amid growing concerns about the declining influence of Kenyan music in East Africa, with several industry players calling for urgent interventions to revive the local music scene.
