Former Agriculture Principal Secretary Richard Lesiyampe, who served under the Uhuru Kenyatta administration, has expressed concerns for his safety following a gun attack last week.

Speaking on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, after recording a statement at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) office in Maralal, Lesiyampe said he had received credible reports that his life was under threat. The ex-PS told DCI sleuths that a vehicle he had previously used was targeted by suspected bandits who sprayed it with bullets.

According to Lesiyampe, the shooting incident occurred shortly after he attended a friend’s wedding in Baragoi, Samburu North. He had traveled home safely in a convoy of two vehicles. Later, one vehicle, belonging to Samburu County, left to pick up some friends and was attacked. The driver sustained injuries during the attack.

Lesiyampe condemned the attack, stating it is unacceptable for anyone to plot harm against another person. He emphasized the importance of safeguarding constitutional rights, including freedom of movement and association. He urged the DCI to thoroughly investigate the incident and hold those responsible accountable.

Last week, suspected bandits targeted Lesiyampe’s home, which is considered a secure area where locals often keep their livestock. The attackers reportedly fired at the house, consistent with the violent tactics seen in previous raids that have caused loss of lives and destruction of property.
