Kikuyu Council of Elders Chairman Wachira Kiano has issued a firm warning regarding Maina Njenga’s recent political moves, calling him a “joker” and reiterating that the people of Mt. Kenya remain solidly behind Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

According to Nation Africa, Kiano’s statement comes in response to Njenga’s announcement on January 3, 2025, that he had formed a new group—referred to as “jeshi” (army)—to offer security to MPs as they tour the region.

Njenga, who was once associated with the outlawed Mungiki group, has reinvented himself as a political figure, now aligning with President Ruto’s government.

However, Kiano, speaking on behalf of the Kikuyu elders, made it clear that Gachagua is the undisputed leader of Mt. Kenya. “Our de facto leader is Rigathi Gachagua, and we are solidly behind him. We will not be swayed by Maina Njenga. He will not take us anywhere,” Kiano said.

Njenga’s declaration that his group would protect MPs on the ground to ensure the successful implementation of President Ruto’s policies and safeguard development resources has raised concerns. Local leaders are wary that such moves could spark a return to the divisive and violent tactics of the past, reminding the community of the shadow of Mungiki-like gangs.
