Kenyan volleyball star Wanja was laid to rest in an emotional service attended by family, friends, teammates, and fans, all of whom mourned the loss of an athlete who had captured the hearts of many.
The funeral, held at a local church in Nairobi, was filled with tributes honoring Wanja’s incredible contribution to Kenyan volleyball and her enduring legacy in the sport.
Wanja, who passed away at the age of 29, had been an integral part of the national team, earning accolades for her exceptional skill, determination, and leadership on and off the court.
She was widely regarded as one of the most talented volleyball players in Kenya, helping the team achieve success in regional competitions and raising the country’s profile on the international stage.
In his eulogy, Kenya Volleyball Federation President Waithaka Kioni described Wanja as a “true champion” and an inspiration to many young athletes.
“She was not just a player; she was a mentor, a motivator, and a symbol of excellence,” Kioni said, his voice breaking with emotion. “Her legacy will live on in the hearts of everyone she touched.”
Family members shared fond memories of Wanja’s humble beginnings and her unwavering passion for the sport. Her sister, in tears, recalled how Wanja had always dreamed of representing Kenya on the world stage, a dream she fulfilled through hard work and dedication.
Teammates also paid tribute, sharing stories of Wanja’s unselfishness, teamwork, and her infectious energy, which made her beloved both on and off the court. The service ended with a moving song by the national team, a final tribute to the volleyball star who had touched so many lives.
