Following a traffic accident on the Kerugoya-Kutus route, seven individuals have suffered serious injuries, and one person has died.

This isn’t your typical collision when a driver speeds, loses control, or collides with another car. John Kiama, Kerugoya’s Disaster Response Officer, said the tragedy was caused by a supposedly failed hijacking attempt.

According to Kiama, who described the accident, they heard cries from a distance. They initially believed them to be the typical screams they periodically hear from the nearby mortuary when mourners pick or drop off their departed family members.

But a few moments later, he realized this was unusual and made the decision to investigate. When he and the others arrived at the Kerugoya-Kutus road, they saw that the car’s occupants were being kidnapped and yelling for assistance.

“We learned that the car had been hijacked when we arrived at the road, and the people inside were yelling for assistance. At Kerugoya Boys, one woman leaped off the car,” Kiama explained.

“In an attempt to save the occupants, we tried to follow the car. One of them had already passed away, we learned,” Kiama added.

Witnesses to the collision, including James Mugo, reported seeing the car rapidly plummeting as its occupants were being flung from it.

“The vehicle descended and stopped 7 kilometers away from the scene,” Mugo revealed.
