The Ministry of Education (MoE) has been placed on the spotlight, after being flagged for allegedly spending Ksh 4.21 billion on invigilators, in the first three months of the 2024/25 financial year between July and September 2024.
As disclosed by the Controller of Budget (CoB) Margaret Nyakang’o, out of the Ksh 4.21 billion that the Ministry spent, Ksh 2 billion was used to pay examination invigilators, while the remaining Ksh 2.21 billion, was used to pay “specialized suppliers.”
Red flagging the Ministry of Education, Margaret Nyakang’o drew attention over the expenditure in the education sector, which spent Ksh 160.16 billion in the current financial year 2024/25, compared to Ksh 129.04 billion the ministry had spent in a similar period in the financial year 2023/24.
Additionally, Margaret Nyakang’o further pocked holes at the Ministry of Education expenditure which was the highest beneficiary in the current financial year having recieved the highest proportion of money, to enhance development of facilities to support the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC).
As of September 30, 2024, the government through the Ministry of Education had reportedly spent Ksh 6.4 billion to expedite the construction of Junior Secondary School (JSS) classrooms, but the project was still dragging as it was still at a completion rate of only 21%, with all that money being channeled towards the project.
In bid to make the project a success, Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Education Hon Julius Ogamba, confirmed that the government had released another Ksh 18.8 billion to the MoE on October 2024, that was meant to enhance construction of 16,000 classrooms ahead of the grade nine enrolment of learners.
