The ‘yangu kumi yako kumi’ mantra was employed by UhuRuto in the 2013 and 2017 elections, however former President Uhuru Kenyatta found it difficult to clear the debt in 2022 after neglecting to support his then-DP and instead choosing to support his handshake brother and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

But after the Mount Kenya area promised to reimburse William Ruto for the support he provided to Uhuru Kenyatta during his two terms as president, Ruto overcame all odds to defeat Uhuru’s candidacy in the general elections of 2022. However, after receiving more than 47% of the vote from Central Kenya, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua asserted that the vote-rich Mount Kenya region had paid off President William Ruto’s political debt in full.

Gachagua claimed that the Mt region is no longer owed anything by the Head of State after winning a landslide victory in the 2022 General Elections while speaking at a funeral in Makueni County’s Mbooni Constituency on Wednesday, December 18, 2024.

The reason for President William Ruto’s political debt is his previous backing of former President Uhuru Kenyatta, who backed Raila Odinga in the 2022 elections despite having pledged to support Ruto. Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, meanwhile, emphasised yet another political duty owed to Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka by the Mount Kenya region.

Gachagua commended Kalonzo for filling in for the late President Mwai Kibaki, who had a lack of legislators following his election victory in 2007. As Kalonzo positions himself as a possible successor to President Ruto in the 2027 elections, Gachagua stressed that the region is ready to pay him back.

“We recall that in 2007, after Mwai Kibaki had won the presidency but had few Members of Parliament to forward the government’s agenda, your leader Kalonzo Musyoka assisted him. Kibaki accepted Kalonzo’s assistance. According to Gachagua, the Kibaki-Kalonzo administration significantly increased the nation’s economic growth.
