Drama unfolded in Kitale as a Catholic priest was arraigned in court over allegations of indecent conduct with a church member.

Father Daniel Gitau Waweru, who served in the Kipsaina area of Cherangany, faced charges of misconduct and sexual assaulting a minor.

The priest, who appeared visibly unwell and used crutches for support, denied the accusations before Resident Magistrate Irene Kabuteh on December 13, 2024.

The charges included indecent acts involving sexual engagement with a congregant aged 14 years.

During the court session, the prosecution argued against granting him bail, citing concerns that he posed a flight risk due to previous difficulties in locating him.

Authorities emphasised that his public status could influence witnesses and obstruct justice.

On the other hand, the defence strongly opposed the prosecution’s claims, arguing that Fr. Waweru had been cooperative and was unlikely to flee.

They also highlighted his medical condition, stating that he required consistent care due to a back ailment.

Investigations revealed that efforts to apprehend the priest were challenging as he frequently turned off his phone, complicating tracking efforts.

Authorities noted that he had written a statement about the case in 2023 after being summoned for questioning.

The case has drawn significant public attention, with many following the court proceedings closely.

The court is set to decide on December 17 whether to grant the accused bail as the case continues.

This incident has sparked broader discussions about accountability within religious institutions and the need to address misconduct involving trusted community leaders.
