The former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has disclosed that he now uses a KDF-style protection with a team of former soldiers ex-police officers and former Kenya Wildlife Service and Kenya Forest Service staff to guard his residences. This arrangement comes after the state security personnel guarding him was withdrawn from his body following his impeachment.
ImageHe said that offering employment to retired officers was done to secure his properties and family in the case where the state security was inadequate. He said that all his new security guards were professional and experienced to be assigned to this job and these guards had volunteered to work for him when all his official guards were pulled off.
ImageSome of them have been headlines and features as to why Gachagua’s state security has been withdrawn. Some people have perceived it as a way of weakening Gachagua amid his conflict with the presidency of William Ruto. However Gachagua has stood his ground to argue that the rerun only boosted his political determination to push for the political agenda of Mount Kenya region ahead of successive general elections in the country.
The security detail to the former deputy president shows a widening rift within the Kenya Kwanza alliance and a sordid fate for elite politicians who switched sides from the ruling party only to be discarded. Evaluators say that this problem should serve to remind people that there is no political bias when it comes to personal safety.
