Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o has praised Raila Odinga’s performance in the recent African Union Commission (AUC) Chairmanship debate, calling it outstanding and visionary.

In a statement shared on X, Nyong’o said many Africans were captivated by the live debate among the three candidates vying for the prestigious position.

According to him, Raila outperformed his competitors, drawing on his prior experience as the AU High Representative for Infrastructure Development.

“Raila responded to questions with calmness and a sense of purpose, using his lived experience to articulate how the AU works and what needs to be improved at the leadership level,” Nyong’o stated.

The governor highlighted Raila’s emphasis on advancing intra-Africa trade and improving infrastructure, particularly railroads, roads, and maritime transport, as central to his vision for a more unified and self-reliant Africa.

He described Raila’s vision as pivotal in elevating the continent to global prominence, dubbing it the new first world.

Nyong’o expressed confidence that the debate has clarified to AU member states who is best suited for the chairmanship.

“We are proud of you. Go Captain, go; Africa is eagerly waiting for your leadership,” he concluded.

The Mjadala Afrika debate was held on Friday night in Addis Ababa Ethiopia. Raila faced his two opponents who included Randriamndrato, former foreign affairs minister of Madagascar and Mahmoud Ali Youssouf who is the current foreign affairs minister for Djibouti.

Elections for the African Union Commission will be held in February 2025 and African heads of States will be voting to choose the next chairperson of African Union Commission.
