Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has addressed the recent meeting between President William Ruto and former President Uhuru Kenyatta, describing it as a sign of maturity and a step towards healing political divisions in Kenya. Speaking on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, Gachagua praised the leaders for putting the country’s interests first by attending the consecration of Bishop Peter Kimani in Embu County last month.

Gachagua, who had a strained relationship with both leaders following his impeachment in October, emphasized the importance of reconciliation and cooperation. “When leaders come together, it sends a strong message of peace and unity. We might not agree on everything, but Kenya is bigger than any individual,” he said.

The Embu event marked a rare public appearance of the three leaders together. It was the first time Ruto and Gachagua had shared a platform since Gachagua’s ouster. Despite being seated apart from Ruto and Uhuru, Gachagua noted the significance of their attendance, calling it a moment of reflection for all political players.

Political analysts have hailed the meeting as a step toward reducing political tensions, though some see it as largely symbolic. Gachagua reiterated his call for leaders to focus on service delivery rather than personal differences. He also urged Kenyans to remain united and work towards building the nation.

As Kenya navigates a challenging economic and social landscape, the message from its leaders of dialogue and collaboration offers hope for progress and stability. Whether this newfound unity will translate into tangible actions remains to be seen, but for now, the gesture has been warmly received by many.
