Miriam Wangui Kaguru, a woman from Molo, Nakuru County shared her experience of leaving her husband to live with a pastor after being introduced to a church by her sister-in-law. In her quest for answers to life’s struggles, Wangui found herself in a situation that ultimately cost her marriage.
Her journey began when her sister-in-law introduced her to a church that promised success and spiritual guidance. She and her husband had moved to Karagita to be closer to her brother, hoping for support as they navigated their challenges.
The pastor became a significant figure in her life, often holding her hand and praying with her. She recalls being asked personal questions about her interactions with friends and being told that a friend had “stolen her star,” which necessitated deliverance. This marked the beginning of a troubling relationship with the church.
She was encouraged to pray and fast for a week. During this time, she struggled to care for her young child, even unable to breastfeed due to a lack of milk. Despite her faith in the pastor and the church, Wangui’s life grew increasingly difficult, with her business facing challenges as well.
Despite warnings from her husband and her father to step away from the church, Wangui felt deeply brainwashed. She described a sense of control exerted by the church. “It was like they were controlling me.” She said. She added that at night she would experience distressing sounds that kept her awake, leading her to call the pastor for prayer.
Eventually, Wangui made the decision to leave her husband, whom she viewed as an obstacle to her relationship with the church. She moved in with the pastor, even labeling her husband as an “evil spirit” for trying to end her ties with the church.
Wangui’s experience was not a positive one, and it took time for her to regain clarity. She ultimately recognized that the church had stripped her of meaningful relationships, including her marriage and family ties. Her story highlights the risks associated with manipulation in religious settings and the profound impact it can have on personal lives.
