Uganda’s Loice Chekwemoi and Kenya’s Samuel Chebolei emerged victorious in the women’s and men’s 10km races, respectively, during the 2024 edition of The Great Chepsaita Cross Country Run held on Saturday in Uasin Gishu County.
Chekwemoi showcased her dominance in the women’s category, crossing the finish line in an impressive 34:32. Ethiopian Shemiles Molla Mekidis followed closely to take second place, while Kenya’s Celestine Biwot completed the podium with a time of 36:43.
The men’s race was equally competitive, with Samuel Chebolei delivering a stunning performance to clinch the top spot. Robert Kiprop claimed silver, and Mathew Kipkoech secured third place in the thrilling contest.
Speaking at the event, legendary marathoner Eliud Kipchoge emphasized the unifying power of sports. “Sports is the only messenger which can’t be criticised. If you want to pass a message, do it through sports. Nobody can criticise, nobody can go to court. Sports brings unity, sports brings peace, which ultimately leads to development. I urge the leaders here to put your budgets on humanity,” Kipchoge said.
He added,” To send a message, we can organize a sports event like today. By doing this, we promote education and seek out young talent. Sport is a universal messenger that cannot be criticized. I take pride in mentoring the youth, striving to instill hope, morals, and values in the younger generationThe event also spotlighted challenges in the sports industry. Transport CS Kipchumba Murkomen addressed the pressing issue of gender-based violence, stating, “We have a big problem called gender-based violence and sexual abuse in the sports industry, and that’s why I have inaugurated a team that will deal with it.”
The second edition of the Chepsaita Cross Country Run not only highlighted East Africa’s athletic prowess but also underscored the need for unity and positive change within the sports sector.
