The 7th Battalion the Kenya Rifles (7KR), popularly known as the Maroon Commandos, marked their Regimental Day with a vibrant celebration at Lang’ata Garrison, Nairobi County.The event, themed “Honouring Our Legacy,” commemorated 56 years of service since the Unit’s establishment in 1968.
The ceremony commenced with the Chief Guest, Commander Kenya Army Lieutenant General David Tarus, inspecting a quarter guard and laying wreaths at the Unit’s monument in remembrance of fallen soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice in defending Kenya.
A highlight of the day was the unveiling of Lieutenant General Lengees Drive, named in honour of Lt Gen (Rtd) James Lengees, the Unit’s first Commanding Officer.
In addition to serving the Kenya Army with distinction, including as Commander of the Kenya Army from 1986 to 1993, Lt Gen Lengees was instrumental in moving the Unit from Gilgil to Lang’ata on January 10, 1973.
The unit’s colour, which symbolises their valour, was displayed in a Regimental March Past parade during the occasion.In an effort to preserve and disseminate the Battalion’s rich history for upcoming generations, Lt Gen Tarus also started the Unit’s first magazine.
Lt Gen Tarus praised 7KR in his speech for their unwavering dedication to protecting Kenya from land-based threats and for playing a crucial part in the Kenya Army’s tactical operations.
Additionally, he acknowledged their families’ steadfast support, highlighting their crucial role in the Unit’s success.
“This day serves as both a source of inspiration and an essential component of your regimental life. He praised the families who had been the Unit’s members’ unwavering pillars of support.
