Kenya’s Gen Z has taken to the streets, chanting “Adani Must Go, Ruto Must Go, Raila Must Go” as protests reach a fever pitch. The youths, frustrated by corruption and unfulfilled promises, are demanding accountability from their leaders.
The protests, which have been building momentum over the past weeks, have been ignited by the today’s indictment of Indian billionaire Gautam Adani by US authorities on charges of bribery and fraud. Adani’s controversial contracts with key Kenyan institutions, including the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO) and Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), have come under intense scrutiny. Despite the serious allegations, President William Ruto and opposition leader Raila Odinga have defended Adani, further fueling public outrage.
The Gen Z protesters, known for their tech-savvy and social media prowess, have organized nationwide demonstrations, calling for the removal of Adani and the resignation of both Ruto and Odinga. Their chants echo a broader sentiment of disillusionment with the political establishment and a desire for genuine change.
The protests have not been without incident. Reports of clashes with police and arrests have surfaced, highlighting the tense atmosphere. However, the resolve of the youth remains unshaken. They are determined to hold their leaders accountable and push for a more transparent and just governance system.
