The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested two suspects accused of attempting to extort a staggering Sh2 million from the Director General of a prominent State Corporation.
According to the Star newspaper, the suspects, whose identities remain under wraps pending further investigations, allegedly presented themselves as judicial crusaders, masquerading as champions of accountability.
They are said to have approached the Director General with a bold proposition: withdraw a damning petition filed in court over alleged embezzlement of public funds in exchange for their hefty “fee.”
But the EACC, always a step ahead in its war on graft, was having none of it. Acting on a tip-off, the Commission set its sights on the alleged culprits.
According to EACC Spokesperson Eric Ngumbi, the agency launched a meticulous operation last Friday, culminating in the dramatic arrest of the two suspects at a Nairobi restaurant.
âUpon receiving the complaint, we quickly mounted a covert operation,â Ngumbi stated. âThe suspects were apprehended red-handed after allegedly receiving Sh1.7 million in cash, part of the Sh2 million they had audaciously demanded.â
As diners at the restaurant unsuspectingly sipped their lattes, the EACC agents swooped in, catching the suspects in the act. The duo was whisked to EACCâs Integrity Centre for processing before being transferred to Kilimani Police Station.
Ngumbi described the suspects as part of a growing cabal of opportunists who weaponize the justice system for personal gain.
âThese individuals present themselves as advocates for transparency and good governance but, in reality, use legal channels to coerce and extort innocent people. Itâs a dangerous trend,â he said.
This sensational arrest is just the latest in the EACCâs relentless crackdown on graft.
Weeks earlier, the Commission nabbed two Kenya Forest Service officers in Garissa for an elaborate scheme of exploiting casual workersâ wages. The duo allegedly inflated salaries, only to demand a kickback from the excess.
With cases piling up, Ngumbi vowed, âEACC remains steadfast in its commitment to rooting out corruption, however sophisticated its disguise.â
