Religious leaders from Nyanza have issued a stern warning, threatening to mobilize Kenyans for civil disobedience in response to what they describe as systemic oppression and mismanagement under President William Ruto’s administration.

The leaders expressed their concerns following a scathing statement by the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB), which highlighted issues such as unexplained killings, abductions, rampant corruption, and a growing culture of dishonesty within the government.

Maurice Muhatia, the KCCB Chairman, led the bishops in their critique of the Kenya Kwanza government, particularly pointing out controversial policies such as the proposed Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF).

The bishops decried what they termed as a disregard for public welfare and an increasing disregard for transparency in governance.

The Nyanza clerics, aligning themselves with the bishops’ concerns, warned that continued neglect of these critical issues would compel them to rally the public for peaceful resistance.

“Kenya is sliding into a state of lawlessness and disregard for human dignity. We cannot stand by while innocent lives are lost and the government turns a blind eye to the plight of the people,” a spokesperson for the religious leaders said.

However, President Ruto has signaled a reconciliatory tone, responding to the bishops’ grievances during a public address on Saturday.

The President pledged to prioritize the concerns raised by the Catholic clergy and emphasized his administration’s commitment to addressing these issues through dialogue and collaboration.

“We acknowledge the sentiments shared by the Church leaders, and I want to assure all Kenyans that my government is working tirelessly to address the challenges they have pointed out. Our administration is committed to fairness, justice, and unity for all,” President Ruto said.
