Catherine Waruguru, a Kenyan politician and businesswoman and former Laikipia County Woman Representative, recently shared a social media post that has intensified the ongoing clash between the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops and President William Ruto’s administration.

In a powerful statement on her X account (formerly known as Twitter), the bishops condemned the government, accusing it of fostering a “culture of lies” and infringing on basic human rights.

Their demands for an end to the silencing of critics, oppressive taxation, rampant abductions, and the alarming rise in violence against women have resonated deeply with many Kenyans.

Waruguru voiced her support for the bishops, urging the government to respect these ordained men rather than label them “tribalists” for speaking truth to power.

“Respect for these men of God is not servitude,” she declared, standing firmly against the government’s dismissive stance. Her words struck a chord, especially among Kenyans who recall the church’s support for the government during the election period.

Many echoed Waruguru’s sentiments, expressing feelings of betrayal and frustration. As one commenter put it, “The government got cozy with the church, but now they’re ranting like someone left on read!”

Another observed, “When you’re doing the right thing, there’s no need to explain yourself.” This public rebuke from the bishops has revealed a widening rift between the church and a government that once relied on their support.
