A witty quote by a Kenyan journalist has taken over social media, with netizens creating funny posts from it.
The phrase, which has now become iconic on social media, was created by award-winning journalist Pheona Kenga, who has worked for Citizen TV, TV47, and Look Up TV. “Labda kwa mgeni jijini, maandishi haya si mageni jijini.” She famously remarked, “Ila kwa wenyeji wa jiji, ni maandishi tulioyazoea.”
“These writings are not new in the city except for visitors,” is how the statement is loosely translated. But city people are accustomed to them. A close friend of the journalist, who wished to remain anonymous, told TUKO.co.ke that Pheona’s inventiveness was underestimated. “This phrase, for instance, has multiple levels to it.”
Kenyans have used the phrase to refer to scenarios in which the gullible are taken advantage of in relationships or business dealings. Some of the most hilarious posts include people promising to call back after a few minutes and never doing it and mothers borrowing money from their kids and promising to refund it. Several women brought up the lies men tell, including saying that they are the most beautiful in the world and they would never cheat on them.
