President William Ruto has left Kenyans talking after his new directive. In his latest remarks, the head of state has directed the Commission for University Education to facilitate the awarding of a charter to Turkana University.
Speaking at the Turkana Tourism and Cultural Festival in Lodwar, Ruto emphasized that the process would not involve any shortcuts saying, “There will be no shortcuts.” He reiterated the importance of ensuring that the university meets all necessary standards before the charter is granted.
In his address, Ruto highlighted that certain facilities must be established at Turkana University to ensure it operates on par with other institutions across the country. He acknowledged that delays in awarding the charter were partly due to the rejection of the Finance Bill for 2024, which led to a financing gap that hindered progress.
The President also mentioned plans to propose Sh360 million in a supplementary budget this coming month to support the university’s development. A university charter is a formal document that establishes a university and outlines its rights and privileges.
“President William Ruto has instructed the Commission for University Education to make arrangements to give Turkana University a charter. Ruto, however, maintained that there would be no shortcutss in awarding the institution a charter,” The Star Kenya reported.
