New details have emerged why the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and Coordination of National Government Prof. Kithure Kindiki may not be Kenya’s next Deputy President despite being appointed to the position. The Interior CS was appointed today by President William Ruto to succeed the embattled former DP who lost the seat following impeachment.
Despite being appointed as Deputy President, Kithure Kindiki’s rise to power as the second in command is already facing legal battles. A case has been filed against Kindiki’s appointment and subsequent vetting by the National Assembly. The petition seeks to bar the National Assembly from vetting and voting on his appointment.
In addition, to this latest development, sources also indicate that former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua who was impeached yesterday will be going to court to fight his impeachment in a bid to retain his position as the second in command. Gachagua’s legal team is expected to present the impeachment case in court with the hopes of overturning the Senate’s decision.
If successful, these two court cases will restore Gachagua to office and block Kindiki from assuming the Deputy President position. These legal battles have cast doubt over Kindiki’s potential resumption of office as President William Ruto’s deputy. The court’s ruling on these two petitions will determine whether or not CS Kindiki will be vetted by the National Assembly or if Gachagua will regain his former DP position.
