Former Presidential aspirant and leader of the Thirdway Alliance Party, Ekuru Aukot, has publicly called for the Senate to dismiss the impeachment charges against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Aukot’s statement comes as the impeachment trial, initiated by the National Assembly, continues to unfold in the Senate. Aukot believes the charges are baseless and urged the Senate to reject them.

The impeachment motion was brought to the Senate by MP Patrick Mutuse, who faced significant challenges during the trial. The motion accuses Deputy President Gachagua of various offenses, including misuse of office and corruption. However, Mutuse struggled to defend the charges under intense questioning.

During the Senate hearing, lawyer Elisha Ongoya, representing Gachagua, cross-examined Mutuse on the claims he presented. Ongoya questioned the MP’s knowledge of the facts and the evidence in his affidavit, pointing out inconsistencies and gaps.

One notable moment during the trial was when Ongoya asked Mutuse to clarify details regarding the shares in Vipingo Beach Company, a matter tied to the allegations.

“It may be getting hotter, but look at the document, compose yourself, and read. What is the total number of shares in Vipingo Beach Company?” Ongoya asked.

Aukot, after witnessing Mutuse’s difficulties in defending his case, took to social media to express his views. In a post on his X account (formerly Twitter) Aukot stated that the motion, which was sponsored by Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse, lacked credibility.

He argued that Mutuse had failed to provide enough evidence to support the impeachment claims against Gachagua. He further took a swipe at the National Assembly, expressing his disappointment in the MPs for approving what he believes is a weak and baseless motion

“After watching Mwengi Mutuse fry himself with his fat, the Senate should redeem the integrity of the House (if any) and dismiss the bogus charges against @rigathi. What a useless motion sponsored by someone unable to substantiate his own claims. Shame on the National Assembly for approving such an embarrassing motion.” Ekuru Aukot reacted.
