Sulaina Nabasirye, a senior female student from Bwera Secondary School, died after sitting her first final-year exam.

The 18-year-old began experiencing breathing difficulties shortly after completing her first set of exam papers.

Nabasirye had participated in the evening prayers despite being a Muslim and showed no signs of illness.

Authorities in Kasese have confirmed the tragic death of another Senior Four (S4) candidate from Bwera Secondary School.

Daily Monitor reports that the tragedy occurred during the ongoing Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) final exams.

The student, identified as 18-year-old Sulaina Nabasirye, died at Bwera General Government Hospital on Tuesday, October 15 following a medical emergency.

Nabasirye’s demise left the school community in tears as they mourned the student who had just started her final exams the day before.

According to police, the student began experiencing breathing difficulties overnight on October 14, shortly after completing her first set of exam papers.

School matron Penina Biira quickly rushed her to Bwera General Hospital, where she was pronounced dead shortly after midnight.

Rwenzori Regional Police spokesperson SP Nelson Tumushime confirmed the news and expressed condolences on behalf of the police.

“It’s unfortunate that the school has lost one of its trusted candidates, who on Monday sat for her first papers alongside her classmates,” Tumushime said.

Despite being a Muslim, Nabasirye had participated in the evening exam preparations and prayers.

Rev. Yozephano Opolot, the Anglican chaplain at Bwera Secondary School, recalled seeing Nabasirye who showed no signs of illness.

“When we learned of her sudden death, we comforted her classmates and prayed to God for strength,” he said.

Other candidates were allowed to view her body before proceeding to the examination room.

Her remains are expected to be transported to her ancestral village in Bunyaruguru for burial.

The incident occurred at a time when the school is experiencing difficulties, having lost two S4 students in the past two months.

This latest tragedy has shocked the school community as students continue to sit their national exams under difficult circumstances.
