Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata has shared details about his consultative meeting with Azimio leader and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

In a statement he shared on X, the Murang’a governor stated that he met the former prime minister after he invited him for consultations.

He revealed that the meeting took place on Wednesday morning and it centered on discussions about national cohesion and the successes achieved through Kenya’s devolution efforts.

In his statement governor Kang’ata expressed gratitude for the opportunity to engage with Raila Odinga.

“The Right Honourable former Prime Minister Raila Odinga invited me this morning for consultations. We had a good discussion on national cohesion and the progress we have made as a country under devolution,” he wrote.

The timing of the meeting raises eyebrows amid claims that Kang’ata may be positioning himself as a potential replacement for Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, should Gachagua’s ongoing impeachment gets upheld by the senate.

While Kang’ata did not directly address these rumors, his engagement with a Raila Odinga who is currently in good books with president Ruto suggests a strategic alignment that could influence future political realignments.

The Murang’a governor is among other top leaders in the country who have been linked to be the favourite ones who can take over from deputy president Rigathi Gachagua incase he gets impeached.

Other leaders who have been listed as the favourite to succeed deputy president Rigathi Gachagua include prime cabinet secretary Musalia Mudavadi, Interior cabinet secretary Kithure Kindiki, Kirinyaga governor Anne Waiguru and Kiharu constituency MP Ndindi Nyoro.

The impeachment motion proceedings against deputy president Rigathi Gachagua in the senate started on Wednesday and will end on Thursday. Gachagua will be defending himself against eleven charges levelled on him in the impeachment motion tabled by Kibwezi West MP Mwenge Mutuse.

The charges border on gross misconduct, gross violation and abuse of office. The impeachment trial will end on Thursday night and Kenyans will know what next after the senators make their vote.
