Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah has dismissed claims that people in Mt. Kenya are against leaders who support the removal of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. Videos shared on social media showed some politicians being booed, which led to speculation that voters in the region are unhappy.

Ichung’wah defended the decision made by 282 MPs to support the impeachment of the Deputy President, saying it was part of their job to make sure the government is held accountable. He said MPs have the right to remove any government official, including the Deputy President, if they fail to serve the people properly.

Speaking in Kikuyu, Ichung’wah said he had no problems when talking to the people of the area. He denied reports that residents were angry with the leaders. He said the people are smart and understand that MPs are doing their job.

Ichung’wah also said a new Deputy President should be someone who can unite the country, not divide it along tribal lines. He expressed hope that a new Deputy President would serve the interests of Mt. Kenya better.

At the same time, the National Assembly has given evidence to the Senate for Gachagua’s impeachment. The Deputy President has also submitted his defense, and a hearing is expected soon.

Some people have reacted differently to the impeachment. Lawyer Kibe Mungai criticized the MPs, saying they acted too quickly without understanding the accusations.

Chief Justice Martha Koome has appointed three judges to hear Gachagua’s case.
