Nairobi- Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is preparing for his impeachment hearing at the Senate, scheduled for Wednesday, October 16. He has submitted several cartons of evidence to support his defense. In a show of strength, the National Assembly has also delivered over 20 boxes of evidence, transported in two pickups under tight security, to bolster the MPs’ case against him.

The impeachment was initiated by 282 Members of Parliament, who cited serious allegations, including corruption, abuse of office, and threats made against President William Ruto. On the day of the hearing, Gachagua will have four hours to present his defense. Public reactions to the evidence he has submitted have been mixed, reflecting a divided opinion among Kenyans.

One of Gachagua’ s lawyers, Tom Macharia, has publicly criticized the Senate, accusing it of attempting a ” microwave impeachment” to hastily remove the deputy president from office. He claims this effort is occurring despite ongoing legal trials where Gachagua is seeking to block the impeachment proceedings in the Senate.

” They are looking for a microwave impeachment; the Senate is creating its own timeline, ” Macharia stated in court. He urged Justice Chacha Mwita to issue conservatory orders to halt the Senate’ s debate on the impeachment motion. Macharia emphasized the severe implications of an impeachment, arguing that Gachagua would be permanently barred from holding any public office in the country, including a return to his previous role as a District Officer.
