In a tweet that has elicited a lot of debate, Saboti MP Caleb Amisi asks a critical question about the political future of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. With a looming United Democratic Alliance (UDA) State House meeting, Amisi asks, “What if at next Tuesday’s meeting at State House by UDA, Ruto rejects to support the well-advertised impeachment motion against Gachagua by KK MPs?

Amisi’s question underlines the growing tension within the Kenya Kwanza coalition, whose some MPs seek Gachagua’s impeachment. The motion has been headline news, showing the cracks within the ruling alliance, though the President’s final word might change the political equation. Amisi’s tweet told of uncertainty hanging in the air as many questioned if this would be the last government role for Gachagua.

He further probed the possible implications for the MPs from the Mount Kenya region, where Gachagua has the majority of his support. “How does that make the Central MPs welcome in their constituencies?” Amisi questions, insinuating that in case the impeachment motion is rejected by President Ruto, these MPs will have been politically alienated. Central Kenya has traditionally rallied behind its leaders, so that any misstep politically in this region may spell political doom.

Amisi finally refers to the unpredictability of Kenyan politics: “Verily verily I say unto you, Kenyan politics is not for the faint-hearted! Anything can happen to anybody.” He has perfectly outlined the volatile nature of the country’s political landscape, where alliances shift in a snap and political ambitions can get derailed in just an instant.
