A heart-wrenching tragedy unfolded on the Londiani-Muhoroni Road, where several families lost their loved ones in a fatal road accident. Among the grieving is Josh Otieno, a Kisumu resident who lost both his wife and 17-year-old daughter. Otieno shared that his family had initially planned to take a different matatu (a minibus used for public transport in Kenya). However, the conductor insisted they board another vehicle heading to Kisumu. Sadly, just 20 minutes after seeing them off, Otieno received a devastating call informing him that both his wife and daughter had died in the crash.

“They wanted to board another vehicle which was not that one. But the conductor insisted that they must board that vehicle to Kisumu. We talked some few minutes after boarding the vehicle and then after that I only got a phone call from my son that both of them have died,” he narrated.

The tragic accident occurred on Tuesday, September 3, leaving families struggling to come to terms with their loss. The crash predominantly claimed the lives of students returning to school after the holidays, deepening the sorrow felt by the affected families. Many gathered at Our Lady of Mercy Funeral Home to identify their loved ones, while others mourned at St. Vincent Mission Hospital, where they shared their last moments with their family members.

Otieno’s grief is shared by many others who were impacted by the accident. The incident has caused widespread mourning, with families recalling the moments before their loved ones boarded the ill-fated matatu. The accident highlights the dangers present on Kenyan roads, particularly on stretches like the Londiani-Muhoroni Road, which have seen frequent crashes over the years.

In a separate but related incident, a passenger who survived the same accident, identified as Daniel Osieko, walked away from the wreckage. Osieko, a respected church leader and patron of the Christian Union at Nyagoko School, survived despite sitting next to the driver, who tragically did not make it. His survival has been seen by many as a miracle, with his close friend, Dennis Onam, expressing his awe and gratitude. Osieko’s spiritual leadership has touched many lives, and his survival story continues to inspire those who know him.

The tragedy has left families devastated, and the road safety situation in Kenya remains a pressing concern for all involved.
