At the local level, or at the Location and Sub Location levels, respectively, Chiefs and Assistant Chiefs are government officials and spokespeople. These government officials are permanent employees who can receive pensions thanks to the Public Service Commission. Around 6,000 chiefs and their deputies, who serve as law and order enforcers in each of their designated areas, are present in Kenya. They work closely with village elders.

According to one’s level of expertise, the Chiefs are guaranteed to get a base salary of between Ksh 30,000 and Ksh 70,000 each month. The average chief’s pay in Kenya is Ksh 40,000, although the highest paid person earns Ksh 70,000.The Assistant Chiefs, on the other hand, will make between Ksh 26,000 and Ksh 47,000 per month, depending on their degree of expertise. A typical assistant chief makes about Ksh 30,000 per year in compensation.

The average monthly salary for a chief, however, is about Ksh 30,000. The base salary are not adjusted for allowances.
