The government of Kenya under President William Ruto has issued a new directive to married couples and religious leaders across the country that they must comply with. The government, through the office of the Attorney General, has set a 30-day deadline for a crucial task that all married individuals and ministers of faith must now undertake.

According to a communication from the Office of the Attorney General and the Department of Justice, all registrars of marriage and licensed religious ministers are required to submit the certificates of all marriages already conducted. As reported by Star Kenya, these documents must be scanned and uploaded to the Registrar of Marriages in Nairobi by the specified deadline. All married couples are required to adhere to this directive within 30 days.

The new rule mandates that the original marriage certificates must be delivered to the Registrar’s office within 14 days of the marriage ceremony, applying to Christian, civil, customary, Hindu, and Islamic marriages. The government emphasizes that this step is in line with the Marriage Act and must be adhered to without exception. The statement highlights that all married couples and officials must begin submitting these records for marriages conducted from September 1, 2024, onward.
